What We Do

One of the goals of this program is to maintain equality in all six official languages. The purpose of the United Nations Languages Days is to raise awareness of the history, culture and development of each of the six official languages among the staff of the Organization.

On 6June for the birthday of the great Russian poet A.S. Pushkin, within the framework of the program for the support and development of multilingualism and cultural diversity, the United Nations celebrates the Day of the Russian Language.

The decision to hold the Days of Languages was made by the Department of Public Information (now the Department of Global Communications) on the eve of the International Mother Language Day, celebrated annually on February 21st at the initiative of UNESCO.

Each language has the opportunity to find its own unique approach and develop its own program of activities for the day, including inviting famous poets and writers and developing informational and thematic materials.

Why we celebrate Pushkin’s Birthday?

Александр Сергеевич Пушкин (1799-1837)

Pushkin is considered to be the greatest Russian poet and the founder of contemporary Russian literary language. He was born in 1799 in Moscow into a noble family.

Among his ancestors was a captive Abyssinian who became the personal servant and then a protе´gе´ of Peter the Great, and Pushkin subsequently wrote about his great-grandfather in his unfinished story Арап Петра Великого.

His talent as a poet was already evident during his early years at the Lyceum where he wrote poems in Russian and in French. His famous poem 19 октября written in 1825 was dedicated to the anniversary of the Lyceum opening in 1811.

While there Pushkin was asked to recite his poem before the celebrated Russian poet Gavriil Derzhavin, and Derzhavin was so impressed with the talent of the young poet that he hailed him as his successor.
